  4.     DIED. Roch Pierre Charmet, 59, world-record holder for the
  5. most parachute jumps (14,650 in more than 30 years); when his
  6. parachute, which he packed himself, failed to open fully during a
  7. 2,500-ft. drop; near Sheridan, Ore. Charmet, who learned to jump
  8. while serving in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria in the
  9. 1950s, often said he lived by the chutist's adage: "Only sky
  10. divers know why birds sing."
